Michelle LamplDr. Lampl is Professor, Department of Anthropology, Emory University and has served as adjunct faculty, Department of Pediatrics, Emory School of Medicine.  She received a Ph.D., Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 and M.D. from University of Pennsylvania  School of Medicine in 1989.  

As a biological anthropologist, Dr. Lampl's principle research  focuses on human growth and development.  Building on her landmark research establishing the saltatory nature of growth, she investigates the mechanisms of growth and influencing factors, both genetic and environmental.  Current research is focused on fetal and infant growth and development, and the nutritional, immunological and hormonal networks that interact with behavior to influence the growth process. Projects are multi-national including studies in the U.S., Republic of China, Belgium and U.K.   Dr. Lampl also pursues interests in paleoanthropology centered on the evolution of growth and biocultural issues in medical anthropology.  Dr. Lampl has consulted to the National Children’s Health Study, NICHD,  Gerber Research Foundation and NIH projects.

Current administrative assignments include:  Faculty Governance; University Advisory Council for Teaching; Honors Council;  University Research Committee; Selection committees for Emory Minority Graduate Fellowships and Woodruff Fellowships; and is a contributing lecturer for the  Ethics course for the Graduate School.  Dr. Lampl previously served as Director of Undergraduate Studies and acting Director of Graduate Studies, Emory Department of Anthropology.  She co-chaired the University Strategic Planning Committee in 2002-3.

Dr. Lampl is an award winning teacher, having received the 2003 Emory Williams Award for Outstanding Teaching in the Social Sciences at Emory University.  She has been a contributing Professor for live broadcast distance learning courses at the University of Pennsylvania, a resident Research Associate at the University of Bordeaux and has lectured widely internationally.
