Dr. Debra Vidali will participate in a panel discussion "Towards an Understanding of Ethnography" as part of the Emory College Language Center's "lunch and learn" series. Donald Tuten of Spanish and Linguistics will chair the panel, which will also includeAnna Grimshaw of the ILA (and associate faculty in Anthropology). Long a methodology used in the social sciences, ethnography would also seem to have great relevance to language studies because of its focus on cultural phenomena. For that reason, the ECLC has invited Drs. Grimshaw and Vidali, two Emory faculty members who draw on ethnography in their research, to share their experiences with and understanding of ethnography. It is hoped that this discussion will help language studies faculty see how an ethnographic approach might inform their own teaching and research.

Dr. Michael Peletz — A Tale of Two Courts: Shari’ah Transformations in Anthropological and Historical Perspective — International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies Malaysia & Syariah Law Department, Academy of Islamic Studies, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur
This presentation provides preliminary observations concerning continuities and transformations in Malaysia’s Shari’ah judiciary during the past few decades and in the new millennium in particular. It does so through comparative-historical perspectives afforded by two distinct periods of ethnographic observation, spanning a period of a quarter century, bearing on the “same” (but ultimately very different) court in the district of Rembau, Negeri Sembilan.
