Research
Yoon Won Chang’s primary research interest lies in the care of mental illness, carer-patient relationship, suicide and mourning, feminist and queer activism in East Asia. Her PhD research will be an ethnographic project on how structural violence and its collusion with psychiatric intervention in Korea and China (re)construct gendered subjects, and how care that incorporates the subject’s self-destructive desires and temporalities could be made possible. Extending on anthropological inquiries around the biopolitics and abandonment of the ill, she plans to explore the specific conditions that create and sustain relational care. She has previously written about the latest Korean feminist movement, queer subculture in Seoul and the politics of mourning.
